Mothers’ Union celebrates its centenary

CAKE TIME: Lynesack Mothers' Union celebrated its 100th anniversary with a special afternoon tea and cake. Jean Redfearn was asked to cut the cake with other members of the group TM pic

A TEESDALE Mothers’ Union celebrating its centenary is hoping to attract new members to keep the group going.

Lynesack Mothers’ Union was started in 1921 and celebrated the anniversary with a special anniversary at Lynesack Church on Monday, October 4.

The group, which meets every second Monday of the month at Woodland church, opted to have its anniversary meet at Lynesack, where it was originally formed.

Joan Simpson, branch leader, said: “We are normally at Woodland as it a bit warmer there as the church here [Lynesack] can get a bit drafty.”

The celebratory afternoon tea, which included guests from Barnard Castle’s Mothers’ Union and two representatives from the diocese, saw the group’s oldest member, Jean Redfearn, 95, cut the sumptuous birthday cake.

During the pandemic, meetings had to be suspended but all members were delighted to be back together again.

Mrs Simpson, branch leader, said: “It is a great to be back getting together again after Covid. It is the fellowship and support that we have missed the most.

“We would like to keep going and we’re always looking for new members to get involved with the group.

“People think it [the Mothers’ Union] is for old people but it isn’t. We haven’t always been old and were a lot younger when we got involved.”
