Maypole dancing goes down a treat

TRADITIONAL FUN: Black Sheep Morris dancers joined in with other maypole dancers to produce a perfect single plait pattern on their first attempt

RAIN was no deterrent for people determined to enjoy the festivities of Ovington’s annual maypole festival on Bank Holiday Monday.

Along with traditional maypole dancing, which was enjoyed by young and old, entertainment was provided by youth folk group Cream Tees and the Black Sheep Morris Dancers.

Organiser Katrine Paterson said: “We have been running this format for about 14 or 15 years, but there has been maypole dancing [in the village] for many generations.

“Last year was a big event and we had about 350 people but that was a beautiful sunny day.” Despite the occasional outbreak of rain, a large crowd enjoyed the entertainment and numerous cakes and treats on offer. Ms Paterson said all cash raised during the event goes towards arranging the following years event as well as giving financial support to the groups that provide the entertainment.
