Making Barney Better Together group launches self trail in bid to boost Barnard Castle’s profile

GET SNAPPING: The selfie trail

CAMPAIGNERS dedicated to breathing new life into Barnard Castle are hoping anyone with a camera phone will help with their latest initiative – a selfie trail.

The Making Barney Brighter Together (MBBT) team has come up with a tourist trail of 14 locations in and around the town which they say make the best backdrops for taking selfies.

Having snapped their selfie, organisers then want people to post the pictures on social media to spread the word about the town.

A spokesperson for MBBT said: “Knowing the best selfie locations scattered around tourists will be encouraged to spend more time here.

“Using the hashtags #barnardcastleselfie, #lovebarnardcastle and @barnardcastleselfie, each tourist who posts a Barnard Castle Selfie on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest will be showing hundreds of their friends and others what a beautiful, interesting place Barney is to visit. They did something similar in York and some other tourist towns and it has worked well.

“The total cost of this promotion is £18.75 for 1,000 flyers so worth trying.”

The MBBT team are appealing for residents to help get the project off the ground.

“Follow the trail and post your pics linking into the trail’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/barnardcastleselfie,” added the spokesperson.

The best selfies posted for each location will be featured on the Facebook page and linked to the town tourist website www. barnardcastle.org.uk.

The trail includes locations which are well known to residents such as the three bridges, the castle, Scar Top, The Bowes Museum and the Market Cross.
