A 10-year-old dale pupil was inspired to raise cash for a leading children’s charity after completing a homework project.
Lily McCormack, from Staindrop, donated one of her own teddies, came up with a long list of names and charged £1 a go for people to guess the bear’s name to raise cash for children’s charity Barnardo’s.
She also took part in a car boot sale to raise more cash, which she handed over to staff at the Barnard Castle branch of Barnardo’s last week.
The kind-hearted youngster was inspired to raise the money after completing a homework project, Archie’s Challenge, a youth leader initiative run through Staindrop Primary School.
Proud mum Sue McCormack said: “There was a bank of ideas for children to do such as help a neighbour by putting their bins out, make dinner for family, read a book to a younger child or help a charity. Each activity had to be supported by a photo or a note from the person.
“Lily is adopted and she chose Barnardo’s as she wanted to help fostered and adopted children.
“We were going to be taking part in our village car boot sale anyway and Lily asked if she could raise money there,” he added.
“Her two classmates had a table there and they raised lots of money for Great North Air Ambulance too.”
Lily raised £73 for Barnardo’s and told her mum she was disappointed not to have raise more.
Mrs McCormack said: “We looked on Barnardo’s website and saw how even £5 would help children and that made it really worthwhile for her.
“She said she felt strange, like her heart had got really warm.”
