Large numbers of visitors have caused problems across the dale, with police taking the “unprecedented” step of closing the B6277 after congestions caused by 200 parked cars near Bowlees led to emergency vehicles struggling to reach an accident.

Elsewhere, visitors to a Tees beauty spot at Gainford were told to take their rubbish home after leaving a trail of debris on the riverside and police were called to the Demesnes, in Barnard Castle, a number of times due to the number of cars and people ignoring social distancing measures.
