ORGANISERS of a free community Christmas lunch in Evenwood are gearing up for this week’s event which promises to be bigger and better than last year.
More than 70 people over the age of 60, from Evenwood and Ramshaw, have already signed up to attend the meal at Evenwood Workingmen’s Club today (Wednesday, December 4). For the third time, the event is being organised by Kimberley Clark, who runs her own catering business, Kim’s Kitchen, from her home in the village. She is being helped by her sister, Claire Burt. They are working in partnership with Angel Trust, a charity launched by TV personality Scarlett Moffatt.
Ms Clark said: “Last year it went really well. We catered for over 100 people. This year it’s is going to be bigger and better.” Those who attend will enjoy a hot Christmas lunch with a dessert. This will be followed with games and a performance by singer, Jenna Highfield. There will also be bingo and a raffle. Proceeds from the raffle will be split between Angel Trust and funds for the annual kid’s Christmas party at the club.
Everyone will be welcomed into the club’s concert room which is being provided free of charge. Alison Stoker, who runs the club, said: “It is a good cause. A lot of older folk like coming at Christmas. They can come and mix with all of their friends, have a few drinks and have a bit of fun. Some of them wouldn’t get to do that otherwise. It is a big thing in the lives of these people.”
Ms Burt said: “It is about bringing everyone together and them enjoying themselves.”
The event has received support from businesses, supermarkets and individuals. John Bailey, of Tesco supermarket in St Helen Auckland, has arranged hamper donations. Desserts will be provided by Sainsbury’s supermarket at St Helen Auckland thanks to Steve Collier. Asda supermarket, in Bishop Auckland is also making hamper donations, thanks to Danielle Whigham.
A vegetarian option is being served up by Sue Burn.
Balloons are being provided by Nicola Room Decor.
Arrangements have also been made for Asda staff to help out on the day. CA Group, in Evenwood, is donating vouchers, as well as Christmas crackers. The room will be decorated by Emma Westwood-Fulcher. Cash donations have also been received from individuals.
A growing team of volunteers will be there to help on the day including representatives from Angel Trust.
Treasurer of the Angel Trust George Longthorn said: “The club is the hub of the community. Angel Trust’s aims and beliefs are to pay back into the community. That is what this is all about. Ms Clark said: “Without them this would not happen. Even if there is just one person who has not been out for a long time or has not had a hot meal and that one person goes away happy then we will have done something right.”
The event will run from 12pm to 3pm.
