Dale’s old folk delighted to receive letters

IN THE POST: Andrea Hobbs

YOUNGSTERS across the dale have been using the lockdown to pen letters to older people to help overcome social isolation.
Among those who have been receiving the letters are members of Teesdale Day Clubs, who have been unable to meet for their weekly lunches for more than five weeks.
Andrea Hobbs, from Teesdale Day Clubs, said: “We. have been receiving a regular batch of letters.
“It’s just such a great thing and very much appreciated by those who are receiving them.”
Letters for a Friend was started by sisters Betty and Elsie Porter, who came up with the idea after watching Sports Relief.
With the help of their mum, Sarah, they have enlisted the help of other youngsters using their Facebook group, Letters for a Friend, to pen more and more brightly coloured letters which are being distributed across the dale and beyond.
Ms Hobbs added: “It’s been lovely. Lots of the envelopes have beautiful, bright drawings on them, some of rainbows and they’re sure to brighten up someone’s day.”
Ms Hobbs said all the letters were left for a week until they were posted to rule out any risk of passing on the virus.
