Care home donations ‘give something back to village’

GIVING BACK: Evenwood residents Alison Stoker and Ernie Malt each received a £100 donation for their efforts in the community from staff at Lyons Court care home TM pic

A SUMMER fair organised by staff at an Evenwood care home raised more than £1,500 earlier this month.

Funds raised at the event at the Lyons Court complex have not only benefitted the home but residents of the village too.

Activities co-ordinator Judith Buckle said: “We had a summer fair and we asked the residents what they would like to do with the money. Two of them, who are no longer with us, said they would like to give some money back to the community.”

Donations of £100 were given to residents Ernie Malt and Alison Stoker in recognition of their efforts in the village.

Mr Malt, who lives with vascular dementia, came up with idea of creating a dementia-friendly sensory garden in the village. The space is now enjoyed regularly by many people including residents from the care home.

Meanwhile, Alison Stoker organises annual Christmas parties at Evenwood Workingmen’s Club for the children in the village.

Ms Stoker said: “I would like to say a huge thank you. With not being a registered charity every donation is very welcome. I buy for 130 kids at £10 a present.”

Mr Malt also thanked staff at the care home for the generous donation.

He said: “I love to see the residents’ faces light up when they come to the garden. They love the peace to quiet and I do try and spoil them now and again with a piece of cake. The staff at the home are fantastic. I don’t think their praises are sang enough.”

Care home manager Sarah Newton added: “This is for us to give something back to the community. The village is fantastic with the home.”
