Bid to become ‘fittest village’ gathers pace

AND THEY'RE OFF: Durham County Council's healthy walking officer Victoria Lee heads off from Scarth Hall with her "guinea pig" walkers on an inaugural stroll around the grounds of Raby Castle TM pic

A NEW walking group is being formed in Staindrop in a further attempt to make it the “fittest village in England” .

Organisers from Scarth Hall already manage a thriving couch to 5K group, and they have been instrumental in helping Staindrop Academy start a community gym, but now they aim to get the rest of the village walking too.

The Ways To Wellbeing healthy walking group is expected to be launched this spring and in preparation future “certified leaders” are being trained up by Durham County Council.

Victoria Lee, of Walk Durham, visited the village and took a group of guinea pigs on a stroll around Raby Castle.

Ed Chicken, a member of the hall’s committee, said Walk Durham is aimed at not only improving people’s health, but is also sociable and improves mental wellbeing. He added: “The inaugural walk around Raby Castle is a maximum of 90 minutes. Eventually we will have four certified leaders, with first aid qualifications.”

Staindrop resident Allyson Royston was one of those who joined the inaugural walk.

The 61-year-old said: “We joined Walk Durham last month and we went on the one at Middleton. It was enjoyable. We fell back into the coffee shop at the end with about four dogs with us.”
