Bench celebrates village spirit

PULLING TOGETHER: Melanie Ingleson

A MEMORIAL garden to commemorate how a village community pulled together during the pandemic has been created in Ingleton.
The focal point at the centre of the newly created garden, situated in a quiet corner of the village’s playground, is a specially crafted bench, complete with inspiring inscription.
The idea by the parish council to create the garden was sparked by Helen and Paul Manyweathers’ donation of the bench to mark how the community helped each other in lockdown.
Mrs Manyweathers said: “Ingleton is such a lovely place and everyone looks out for each other. We just wanted to put something back into the community, something to say we all supported each other.
“The pandemic has brought everyone together more. We have been out walking more and having chats and we felt we should mark that. Hopefully the bench will be here for many years to come and it’s a lovely, peaceful spot with great views.”
The wooden bench has been dedicated to the community with two inscriptions as well as an NHS rainbow and clapping hands symbols.
The inscriptions read: “To our community who supported each other through the pandemic” and “Tomorrow will be a good day – Sir Captain Tom Moore 1920-2021” .
Villager Judith Pressley said: “The council decided to make the memorial garden around the bench and we asked for donations to purchase bulbs and trees and were amazed, taking in over £350.”
As well as a plethora of bulbs, the garden will feature a number of blossoming cherry trees and volunteers from the village got to work on Friday planting up the area. Mrs Pressley added: “We wanted to make sure that there is a lot of colour around.”
