CHILDHOOD sweethearts renewed vows in an intimate ceremony ahead of their golden wedding anniversary this month.
Barry and Barbara Parker, from Barnard Castle, first met and fell in love when they were teenagers, growing up in Thornaby.
A six-year courtship endured prolonged separations – Barry studied dentistry in London and Barbara completed her nursing training in Darlington – and they tied the knot on December 4, 1971. They moved to Barnard Castle in the mid-80s when Mr Parker opened a dentistry practice and they have remained ever since.
Mr Parker said: “I can’t believe it’s 50 years. It is like being a grandparent or celebrating golden weddings – it’s usually other people but here we are and it’s us.
“I had intended arranging a secret party last year to coincide with Barbara’s 70th birthday, inviting all our family and friends from over the years for a do at the house, but Covid put paid to that.”
This year, the couple enjoyed a luxury hotel break, inviting their four children – Joanne, Matthew, Charlotte and Nicholas, their partners and six grandchildren – Olivia, Connor, Sophie, William, Emily and Ella.
“We renewed our vows in a special ceremony at Rockcliffe Hall with our vicar friend Steve Ridley presiding,” Mr Parker added.
“When we first got engaged, I spent just about all my savings on an engagement ring in Oxford Street, but I never made Barbara a formal proposal. So, in front of our family, I got down on one knee and asked her – it might have been 50 years late, but I was impressed I didn’t need assistance to get back up.”
Mrs Parker said: “I didn’t know what was going on, none of the family did.”
The secret to their long and happy marriage has been the occasional argument and individual interests.
Mr Parker said: “We have been blessed and aside from a brush with bowel cancer we’ve both been in good health and hope we have many more years together.”
