Barnard Castle nursery looks to Danish-based approach for a happy life

WELLBEING: Nursery manager Melanie Mitchell with a wanderlust group learning more about autumn

GREEN Lane Nursery School is aiming to achieve an accreditation that will improve everyone’s wellbeing.
The Hygge In The Early Years Accreditation is a Danish-based approach that focusses on having a happier and simpler life.
Nursery manager Melanie Mitchell said after the Covid-19 lockdown, she felt the school needed something to focus on. Ms Mitchell added: “Using elements of warmth, cosiness and nature we will make the most of every day of the year. As we move through the training we will learn about changes we can make to our learning environments, outdoor provision and daily rhythm to bring about more calmness.”
She added that the focus is on the wellbeing of children and the staff. As part of the scheme the children are enjoying outdoor wanderlust sessions.
Ms Mitchell said: “We are focusing on the seasons and because it is autumn this week it is a lot of activities around leaves. We did mushrooms last week.”
The school has up to two years to achieve accreditation.
