Artist Steve strikes again – artwork swallows up abandoned Cow Green building

INFLATABLE FORM: Steve Messam's artwork at Cow Green

PEOPLE enjoying their lockdown-permitted exercise at Cow Green Reservoir last Thursday had an exclusive glimpse of the latest temporary artwork by Teesdale artist Steve Messam.
The little brick-built hut beside the road to the reservoir appeared to be swallowed by a giant red inflatable form.
The artwork – called ‘hut’ – was the latest in the series of installations on ruined buildings across Teesdale and Weardale.
Mr Messam says that they “reimagine the structures as fantastical follies in the landscape” .
“The follies are only in place for a matter of hours at a time before they are taken down and recycled into the next artwork,” he added.
The self-funded project will culminate in an outdoor exhibition of giant billboard-sized images titled The Architect of Ruins next year.
Mr Messam, who is based in Middleton-in-Teesdale, made global news last year with his artwork Hush, near Bowlees, in upper Teesdale.
