Another traveller trespass – but ‘fewer problems’ during this year’s Appleby migration

APPLEBY BOUND: A camp outside S&A on the business park

BUSINESSPEOPLE on Harmire Enterprise Park, in Barnard Castle, say they had fewer problems during the annual traveller migration to Appleby Fair.

The number of gypsies to trespass on the estate was also down this year.

Funeral director Mark Brownless said the parking area around his business was kept clear throughout the trespass, but the parking area opposite was filled with caravans. Fewer caravans were also noted around Enterprise House. However, the area opposite S&A Builders’ Merchant proved as popular as ever because of a nearby open field where travellers put their horses to pasture.

Branch manager Steve McKie said: “In all fairness we haven’t had any problems, it is just a bit of an eyesore. What annoys me is they have a designated area and they don’t use it.”

The large area available to travellers on Shaw Bank was empty on Tuesday, June 5, despite caravans still located on Harmire Enterprise Park.

Mr McKie said he had no complaints from customers despite much of the parking area being taken up. Open spaces on the estate were littered with campfires and burned beer cans. An open area in Flatts Wood was used as a latrine.

Barnard Castle Police said they had received no complaints regarding this year’s traveller migration

PC Harry Harsh added that police have no power to move the travellers from Harmire Enterprise Park as it is a civil matter.
