AN award-winning community gardening project has received another accolade, this time by Northumbria in Bloom judges.
Veg Out in Barney, which is based at The Hub in Barnard Castle, has been presented a Level 4 Thriving Neighbourhood Award at a ceremony in Gateshead.
Judges were impressed by the amount of produce given away to the wider community.
Much of the vegetables and fruit grown at Veg Out in Barney’s base is used in the kitchens at The Hub as well as individuals.
One of the community group’s part-time members of staff, Bev Teasdale, travelled to Gateshead to accept the accolade. It is the second consecutive year they have won an award from Northumbria in Bloom – last year it was judged outstanding.
Veg Out in Barney founder Dr Ann Barmby said: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve got the award, but it’s a little disappointing we were not found to be outstanding again.”
“We do so much with only a few volunteers.”
