Students’ work goes on show at The Witham in first for Teesdale School

ON SHOW: Teesdale School head of art Nic Bell

THE work of talented young artists studying at Teesdale School is to go on public display early in the new year.
In the first exhibition of its type, the school has teamed up with The Witham to show the students’ work in the arts centre’s gallery.
The display will feature pieces from students of all ages, including A level photography.
Teesdale School head of art Nic Bell said the exhibition would be a celebration of the students’ hard work.
“There is no particular theme to the exhibition,” she said.
“We have asked the sixth formers to create something to go in it and we will choose some of the best bits from the younger year groups.
“This is the first time we have done something like this at The Witham. Normally we would show the work in school at the end of the year but we thought we would do it externally and get a few members of the public to see it as well.”
Ms Bell said the idea came after the students were involved in a project earlier this year called Men’s Voices, which involved an exhibition and panel talk at The Witham which focussed on mental health and issues about masculinity.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday, January 7, to Tuesday, February 1, and will feature everything from portraiture to abstract painting on a variety of subjects.
Among those showing work will be 17-year-old Eleanor Morris, from Eggleston, and fellow sixth former Gaby Hawcroft, from Startforth.
Eleanor, who is studying A level art alongside history and sociology, said she was looking forward to taking part. “It will be my first public exhibition. I have always liked drawing but it wasn’t until GCSE that I got the chance to flourish,” she said.
Gaby, 16, is honing her skills in A level art and photography along with health and social care.
“I have never had the opportunity to put my work on show, so I am looking forward to it.”
