Puppet group to bring classic adventure to life at Middleton-in-Teesdale

WHAT better way to introduce young children from a rural farming community to the theatre than with a play inspired by the classic Jack and the Beanstalk?

The Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services (Utass) base at Middleton-in-Teesdale will host Jack and the Beans Talk, which is told with puppets and offers a gentle introduction to theatre for children aged three to eight.

In this version, Jack lives on a small farm with his mum and has very little to eat.

But he does like to talk. He talks to the birds, his cow and anyone who will listen.

Imagine his surprise when he swaps his cow for some magic beans and starts to hear a whispering in the breeze and a giant rumble in the sky.

The show is being brought to the upper dale by award-winning Garlic Theatre, which promises a charming and inventive puppet show with plenty of interaction, an enormous beanstalk, bags of gold and a smelly old giant.

Jack and the Beans Talk is performed by Iklooshar Malara and is a cautionary tale about what might happen if you throw things out of the window.

The performance is part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme’s current season.

Garlic Theatre is an international award-winning puppet company based in Norfolk.

Previous shows include Shoe Kangaroo and the Big Bad Boot, Billy Goats Gruff and There’s A Monster in My Piano.

The company tours extensively, reaching audiences of more than 20,000 children every year.

The show at Utass takes place on Saturday, November 10, at 2pm.

Tickets are £7 for adults, £5 for children and £23 for families.

Call Utass on 01833 641010 for tickets.
