Mamma mia – Abba tribute are coming, thanks to Clive

STARRY SHOW: Tribute band Planet Abba have wowed audiences around the world with their stage show.

AN internationally acclaimed tribute band is heading to Hamsterley this month thanks to a social club member who put up the security deposit to secure their performance.

Planet Abba, the UK’s leading tribute act devoted to the Swedish mega band, is performing at Hamsterley Social Club on October 14.

The jet-setting quartet have performed their choreographed stage show all over the world including, by personal invitation, at the wedding of Texas’ lead singer Sharleen Spiteri.

The Hamsterley gig was secured thanks to the generosity of member and former treasurer Clive Graham who not only booked the band but underwrote the venture.

He said: “We didn’t have enough money to pay the deposit, but we’ve lost the shop, the butchers and the post office and I didn’t want to see anything else lost, so I put the money up front.”

Since electing a new committee last year, Hamsterley and District Social Club, which has a bar and music hall, has hosted a range of entertainment, such as weekly games sessions and poker nights.

Members and volunteers have also been working hard, redecorating the front bar, revealing original stonework to enhance the cosy, friendly atmosphere.

Club chairman Greg Rowell said: “Before Covid we used to get a lot of customers coming over from Witton but with the road at Salters Lane shut because of subsidence, a lot of people have stopped nipping over

“The idea is to have an act six times a year or so and get the word out what we have on. That will give us a boost and people will probably drop in more often.

“We have made a loss every year since Covid but for the first time post-pandemic we are looking to be on target to make a profit.”

Word has spread about Planet Abba’s forthcoming gig with more than 100 tickets, costing £10 each, already sold. There is still chance to purchase a ticket to see Planet Abba. Call into the club, which is open every day except Tuesday, from 5pm weekdays and 2pm at the weekend.
