Ferocious folk fusion foursome at Whorlton

HIGHLIGHT: 4Square

A MANCHESTER-based folk fusion quartet, who have won fans in Denmark, Czech Republic, Canada and Norway, are hoping to get feet tapping when they bring their alternative style of music to Teesdale next month.

4Square, who describe themselves as a ferocious folk foursome, combine the talents of Nicola Lyons, Michael Giverin, Jim Molyneux and Dan Day. They will perform on Sunday, March 3, at Whorlton village hall.

The group formed 12 years ago in a freezing farmhouse on the outskirts of Rochdale and have played with the likes of Steve Winwood, Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson and Seth Lakeman at festivals across the UK, Europe and Canada.

Their unique sound encompasses Irish, Latin, jazz and any other musical style, which they feel inclined to absorb.

Their trademark shows feature the spectacle of Ms Lyons’ simultaneous fiddle playing and clog dancing and virtuosic mandolin from Mr Giverin galvanised by the driving sounds of Mr Molyneux’s piano and Mr Day’s percussion.

Their intimate performance in Whorlton, which is part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, will also feature some of their own compositions and music from their current album, Fuel.

Rodney Dawson, promoter at Whorlton village hall, said “This will be our first Highlights show of 2019 and we know that 4Square will live up to the very high standard that we have come to expect from the Highlights Rural Touring scheme.”

Doors open at 7pm with 4Square’s performance beginning at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 for adults, children are £5 and a family ticket is £25 and are available by telephoning 01833 627 253 or online at highlightsnorth.co.uk.
