Award-winning Apphia returns to Barnard Castle with new show

POWERFUL: Apphia Campbell brings her new play Woke to The Witham next month

A PERFORMER who delighted the dale with her critically acclaimed play Black is the Colour of My Voice is returning with her new show.

Edinburgh-based Apphia Campbell will perform Woke, a new story of the 20th century African American experience at The Witham, Barnard Castle, next month.

The play follows two women’s fight for civil rights.

One is notorious Black Panther Assata Shakur; the other, a present-day university student enrolling as the Ferguson riots begin.

Set against a soundtrack of original music and traditional gospel and blues sung live, the two women challenge the American justice system, become criminalised through political activism, and ultimately are faced with the same choice: stay and fight, or flee?

Woke won the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award for its premiere season and was highly commended by the judges of the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award.

Catch the show on Thursday, September 12, at 7.30pm. For ticket details, contact the box office on 10833 631107 or go to thewitham.org.uk.
