Art society to stage 20/20 Vision summer exhibition

VENUE: Bowlees Visitor Centre

MEMBERS of Barnard Castle and Teesdale Art Society have come up with a unique challenge for their summer exhibition.

They have been tasked with producing work that fits within a 20cm x 20cm frame.

The exhibition will take place at Bowlees Visitor Centre from Sunday, June 17, to Sunday, July 29.

As part of the display, there will be an open afternoon on Sunday, July 1, from 2pm to 4pm when some of the artists will be available to discuss their work and the activities of the group.

Society chairwoman Christine Hartas said: “Producing a work of this small size has been a new experience for many members, for some a challenge and for others a unique opportunity.

“From a scientific point of view, having 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean you have perfect vision.

“Taken into the world of art this could mean that there is no such thing a perfect vision as we all see things differently.

“20/20 vision only indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance; other important visual skills include perceptions of depth, texture, colour and tone, all which are seen and interpreted by an artist then practically delivered via a variety of media to contribute towards their piece of work.”

Ms Hartas added: “The art society provides opportunity and support to artists of all levels, from complete beginners to those with art qualifications and experience.

“Sessions are of a practical nature, some are for individuals to engage with their own particular project, other sessions are led by group members or invited artists who help members explore artistic styles and develop new skills using a variety of media.”

The society meets weekly throughout most of the year. The winter months see sessions held at the Guide HQ, Birch Road, Barnard Castle, and during the summer there is an extensive programme of outdoor sketching, workshops and outings, most of which involve tea and cake.

New members of all abilities are welcome. For more details go to www.bcastleart. wordpress.com or email bct [email protected]
