A WOMAN from Winston is thrilled to have won tickets for The Castle Players’ next production, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
After their Shakespeare performance in the grounds of The Bowes Museum in the summer, the theatre group sent out a survey to see what people thought of the production.
Two tickets for an upcoming play of their choice were offered in a draw of people who took part.
Moira Hargreaves was picked out of the hat and chose tickets for the autumn production, which is based on Anne Bronte’s novel. She normally comes to The Castle Players outdoor summer performances and had bought tickets for The Comedy of
Errors but unfortunately
couldn’t attend.
Ms Hargreaves says she is looking forward to the play, which is set in Victorian England and caused controversy when the book was published in 1848. Actors in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Ben Pearson and Emily Wilson were pleased with Moira’s choice of play.
Ms Wilson said: “When I heard about plans to stage a production of Anne Bronte’s controversial and seminal novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, I jumped at the opportunity to play the strong, revolutionary female character of Helen.
“It is such a pleasure to once again be working with old and new friends alike in The Castle Players and bringing Anne’s writing to life.”
Ben plays the love-struck Gilbert Markham who is determined to find out more about the mysterious Helen. The truth, when he uncovers it, is shocking.
Director Mary Stastny loved the novel’s adaptation by Deborah McAndrew and says she just had to put it on stage at The Witham.
“Some have dubbed it the first feminist novel as it shines a light on the predicament of married women at that time.
“It was said that the
slamming of Helen Huntingdon’s bedroom door against her husband reverberated throughout Victorian England.”
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall will be performed at The Witham on Friday, November 11, and Saturday, November 12, at 7.30pm, with a matinee on the Saturday at 2pm.
Tickets are available from The Witham box office either at www.thewitham.org.uk, on 01833 631107, or in person between 10am and 4pm,Tuesday to Saturday.
