All smiles at Romaldkirk WI’s centenary celebrations

MANY HAPPY RETURNS: The members of Romaldkirk WI who celebrated the branch's 100th birthday at the April meeting

LAUGHTER filled the Reading Rooms as guest speaker Dr Ray Lowry brought Romaldkirk WI’s 100th birthday celebrations to a resounding close.

Institute members were joined by guests from other local WIs, Durham County Federation and past members of the group, for an evening of food, chat and laughter.

Following a welcome from president, Maureen Lind, including the unveiling of the new Romaldkirk WI banner, crafted by members Rosie Smailes and Margery Leath, a hearty buffet provided the main course of the evening.

Then came the cutting of the cake, baked by Maureen Bainbridge and iced by the president, accompanied by a toast to the next 100 years.

Dr Lowry then took to the stage to talk about his varied career, from comic scriptwriter for comedians such as Dave Allen, The Two Ronnies and Tommy Cooper, through a career in dentistry to training and working as a doctor in the North East.

His talk was punctuated with laughter, especially when he showed examples of his pet hate – poor grammar and spelling mistakes in print.

The evening concluded with an amusing poem about aging from babyhood to 100 – and beyond – read by Joyce Nelson.

Romaldkirk WI committee and members want to thank their guests for joining them and making the evening so much fun. Here’s to the next one!
