On Saturday 26th February 2022 Pateley Bridge Auction Mart held their Annual Prize Show & Sale of Show Potential Cattle in conjunction with the fortnightly sale of OTM Cattle, Feeding Bulls & Store Cattle.

A record entry for Pateley Bridge Mart of 17 outstanding haltered calves were put in front of Judge Alan Barnett from Shap, Cumbria, who gave the Overall Championship to a superb Limousin Heifer from MR Ewbank, Intake Farm, Middlesmoor, Harrogate, which later sold for £6200 a centre record to J Nisbet, Ayrshire.

The un- haltered cattle were judged by James Crichton, Egremont, Cumbria, who awarded the Championship to a 12 month old British Blue Steer from MR Ewbank, Intake Farm, Middlesmoor, which later sold for £1600 to Anthony Swales, Melbourne, York.

The Reserve Championship went to a 12 month old Limousin Heifer from JA Butler, Top O Hill Farm, Rochdale, which was purchased by the judge for £1400.

3rd K&GJ Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick, Lancaster (Lim) – £1515

An incredible entry of 30 OTM Cattle (report at bottom of page) 42 Feeding Bulls and 170 Store Cattle were presented to a packed ringside of both regular and new customers, 53 buyers purchased cattle from Pateley Bridge Mart Today and a marvellous trade was achieved for all classes of cattle.

Heifers averaged £1296.87

Steers averaged £1160.44

Bulls averaged £1136.31

A tremendous atmosphere prevailed throughout the day All credit must be given to the vendors for putting forward such an outstanding show of stock, quality was second to none and the farmers of Nidderdale and beyond have certainly flown the flag for Pateley Mart today.

Top price of the day was £6200 for the Champion Heifer a Limousin from MR Ewbank, Intake Farm, Middlesmoor, Harrogate, which was purchased by J Nisbet, Ayrshire, followed by a British Blue also from MR Ewbank, which sold for £3600 for M Wynne, Derbyshire.

Top priced Steer was The Reserve Champion a Limousin from MR Ewbank, Intake farm which was purchased for £2500 by M Wynne, Derbyshire, followed by a Limousin Steer at £1750 from K&GJ Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick, which was purchased by Alan Barnett, Shap, Cumbria.

Top priced Bull was a Limousin at £1640 from Rodney Bros. Plant, Leighton Grange, Healey, Masham purchased by Olivia Matten, Thirsk.

30 OTM cattle met a strong trade many more required to fulfil buyers’ requirements at this fortnightly sale.

OTM Heifers averaged £1204.83 & 197ppk

OTM Cows averaged £1083.16 & 153ppk

Top price per kilo was a 26 month Beef Shorthorn Heifer at 223.5ppk from FW Graham, Highfield House, Ilton, Ripon.

Followed by a 33 month old Limousin heifer at 220.5ppk from HW Cowling & Son Rudding House, Pannal at 217.5ppk for a Murray Grey Heifer from K Simpson & Son Ltd, High Gilmoor, Bishop Thornton

Top price per head was a Simmental cow at £1468.48 from P&CM Houseman, Low Farm, Warsill followed by £1314.30 for a Hereford Cow from PB&D Addyman, Greystone Plain, Hampsthwaite.
