Young gymnasts show talent in competition

STAR PERFORMERS: Barnard Castle Gymnastics Club members are (back) Chloe Hobson

A DALE children’s gymnastics squad is celebrating its success in a regional competition.

Some 13 children from Barnard Castle Gymnastics Club entered The Sport 4 all competition at Catterick Leisure Centre where six members of the team received a medal or ribbon for their first-ever competitive performance.

Each child performed a floor routine to music and two vaults by themselves, in front of a large audience and panel of judges.

Medals and ribbons were awarded to: Ellie Iddon, for third place, and Ruby Brown, for fourth place, in the eight years and under girls’ category; Sam Howell for first place in the eight years and under boys’ category; Abbie Porter, for second place, and Chloe Hobson, for sixth place, in the ten years and under category; Katie Hodgkinson for second place in the 14 and under category

Sophie Willis and Beth Guy coach the team.

Ms Willis said: “The children have worked so hard preparing for this event and they gave it their all.

“It isn’t easy performing in front of everyone on your own but their performances were all incredible and we’re extremely proud of each and every one of them.”

Barnard Castle Gymnastics Club has 48 members who all attend regular training sessions at Teesdale Leisure Centre.

Durham County Council, which runs the centre, also holds recreational gymnastic classes for children aged four and over at a variety of centres including Teesdale Leisure Centre, in Barnard Castle, Consett Leisure Centre and The Louisa Centre, in Stanley.
