Walking football kicks off at Barney community centre

BACK OF THE NET: Coach Kyle Swankie

THE devastating burst of pace over the first ten yards may be a distant memory, but that hasn’t stopped a group of footballers getting together for a weekly kick-about.
The latest walking football sessions to spring up in the dale are being held at the multi-use games area at the TCR Hub, in Barnard Castle.
They are held on a Friday morning and players aged from their 50s to their mid-80s are currently turning out.
The sessions are run by sports coach Kyle Swankie and are the last of the Community Connector activities organised at The Hub during the past year.
Sessions will continue into March, and although primarily aimed at those aged 50 and older, all are welcome to join in.
Jonny Elliott, outdoor pursuits and facilities manager at The Hub, said: “The idea is not to set up a walking football group here – there are already groups across the area.
“This is to give people who have never tried walking football before a go and then to feed into the other groups if they want to keep it going,” he added.
Anyone interested in giving walking football a go can contact Mr Elliott at The Hub on 01833 690150, email info@ tcrhub.co.uk or simply turn up for a game at 10.45am on a Friday.
