THREE cricket clubs across the dale are celebrating success in this year’s Durham CCC grassroots awards.

The awards recognise those club stalwarts without who the game simply cannot continue.
At Middleton-in-Teesdale CC, Anth Coatsworth received the award for services to coaching.
Barnard Castle CC’s Steve Dixon and David Robinson were judged volunteer grounds management team of the year, while Raby Castle’s Scott Hedley was chosen as the county’s unsung cricketing hero.
Mr Coatsworth, who continues to score runs and take wickets for Middleton in the Darlington and District League, was nominated by Dave Garth.
He described Mr Coatsworth as the “driving force” behind Middleton CC’s coaching strategy and delivery, highlighting his role as lead activator for the All Stars and Dynamos programmes for juniors.
Mr Dixon and Mr Robinson were nominated by Barnard Castle CC president Stephen Brenkley.
“In the past ten years, Barnard Castle cricket ground has been transformed. The revolution was instigated by a progressive committee but it has been led by head groundskeeper Steve Dixon,” he said.
“From a standing start, he learnt and mastered the skills of being a groundsman.
“Together with the equally dedicated David Robinson, he has supervised the installation of more seating areas, improved fencing and all-weather nets.”
Mr Hedley was nominated by Raby Castle CC secretary Steve Caygill.
“Scott has been instrumental in the resurrection and growth of the junior section at Raby Castle CC,” said Mr Caygill.
“It's thanks to the work that he puts in that we have more and more children coming to the club every week.”
In all there were 15 categories in the grassroots awards, which were presented during last week's Royal London Cup game between Durham and Sussex.
