Strips for new team

RARING TO GO: Members of Middleton Wanderers Walking Football Club sport their new strips which were bought in part by a donation from county councillors Ted Henderson

A NEW football team is stripped and ready for action thanks to donations totalling £950.

The Middleton Wanderers Walking Football Club received £500 from the Ballinger small grants fund and a further £450 from the neighbourhood budgets of county councillors Richard Bell and Ted Henderson.

The club was formed after lockdown restrictions were eased in April and now has 20 players signed up, mainly aged 50-plus and including two who are well into their 70s. Club secretary Andy Mitchell said the cash had paid for two full sets of strips.

The money has also funded corners flags and new footballs and may also be used to buy training tops. The club trains each Wednesday at 6pm and plans are being made to continue during the winter. Mr Mitchell said: “Walking football is a growing sport. We have now played a couple of friendlies.”

While players for league matches must be aged 50-plus, Mr Mitchell said anyone was welcome to come along to Wednesday training sessions and give the game a go.

Anyone interested can simply turn up to training. Alternatively, contact Mr Mitchell on 07786 361718 or email andymitchellmail@btinter
