COCKFIELD Primary School’s tag rugby team has enjoyed success in a county contest.

In October, the team took part in the Level 2 school games tag rugby competition.

The event was split into two rounds.

The first was held at Staindrop Academy, where the Cockfield kids won and went through to the second round at Bishop Barrington School.

Again, they beat all comers, leaving Cockfield Primary in first place in the Wear Valley cluster of schools

As a result of their success, they were put through to the Level 3 school games competition to play in the County Durham final.

The final was held at North Durham Academy.

Cockfield’s tag rugby team played against 12 of the best primary-aged teams in the county and walked away with third place.

The team consisted of a selection of ten children from years 5 and 6 – Finn Beadle, Blake Milroy, Max Armstrong, Kate Davidson, Ruby Jones, Blake Milroy, Eva Longstaff, Harvey Longstaff, Toby Smith and Evan Akers.

Ten-year-old Max Armstrong said: “It was really fun.

“I felt confident going into the county finals because we had won tournaments before. It was nerve-racking on the day though.”

Kate Davidson, also 10, said she liked the tournament because everyone took turns in playing the games.

PE subject leader Emma Woods said she was extremely proud of the tag rugby team.

“They have shown fantastic team spirit and exceptional rugby skills throughout all of their tournaments,” she added.

“For a small village school, this is a brilliant achievement.”
