Our heroes of the Special Olympics

Athletes from the Special Olympics GB Teesdale Swimming team enjoyed outstanding success at the National Summer Games in Birmingham last month, competing across a range of swimming disciplines.

The team comprised Adam Rowntree, Declan Haughney, Jonathon Taylour, Erica Dixon, Lucy Bridson and Eleanor Cleasby.

The six-strong team returned home with an impressive haul of 12 medals – six gold, four silver and two bronze – along with three fourth-place finishes, one fifth and two sixth-place finishes.

Erica Dixon also carried the Flame of Hope in the opening ceremony for the National Games.

The Flame of Hope is the official torch and symbol of the Special Olympics, representing courage, unity and a celebration of diversity.

Christine Taylour, who leads the Special Olympics GB Teesdale Branch, said: “We are incredibly proud of our team.

“Birmingham gave our swimmers the opportunity to compete against athletes from across the country, but the Games were about much more than competition.

“They were also a chance to meet new people, travel to new places, make friends and be part of a major national event celebrating sporting ability at every level.

“Special Olympics is a big family and, through sport, helps people with learning disabilities develop skills and confidence, realise their potential, and support their physical and mental wellbeing.”

The Teesdale Branch is now looking to build on this success by expanding the range of sports it offers, including boccia, cycling and triathlon, while continuing to grow its membership.

The branch is also making the most of opportunities to compete at events across the Special Olympics GB community.

Just six days after the Birmingham Games, the swimming team travelled to Blackpool for a regional competition, with further events planned in Scarborough and Leeds later this year.

The branch also thanked Durham County Councillors Chris Foote-Wood and Richard Bell for helping to make the trip to Birmingham possible.

A total of £400 in councillor grants – £300 from Cllr Foote-Wood and £100 from Cllr Bell – contributed towards travel, subsistence and entrance fees for the swimming gala.

Spokesperson Peter Dixon said: “We are very grateful to both councillors for their support, which helped our swimmers take part in this fantastic national event.”

The Teesdale Branch is keen to welcome new athletes as well as volunteers and supporters who can help with coaching, event organisation, transport, fundraising and practical assistance.
