JUNIOR Football

A LOCAL junior football side has been formed in Cockfield ahead of the new season and is already proving a success.

Brian Barber has put Cockfield AFC juniors together, and they now have five junior sides heading into the new campaign.

With teams ranging from under eights to under 15s, there are about 60 young footballers raring to go. With a full range of abilities, it is hoped it can bring the local community together.

Mr Barber said: “We’ve got kids from all round the local are. We competed in our first mini football tournament and came away with second place which was a fantastic achievement.”

Mr Barber is determined to head the club in the right direction, but is looking for help from local businesses.

He said: “We need sponsors to come forward and keep the club going. It’s fantastic what we have so far, and we are looking to improve on that.”

The club is based at the Pauline Charlton Pavilion in Cockfield, with training taking place twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They will play competitive matches every Sunday morning and they will be part of the TJFA league system.

The club started when South West Durham juniors under 14s needed a new home. Mr Barber said: “We have been going since April where we offered free sessions for children from ages six to 16.

“Brenda and Neville Singleton have helped massively, and we believe in the vision we set out in April.”

The club is eager to recruit players and keen for footballers of all abilities to be part of the growing club.
