NICKY Lee-Shield continued his remarkable progress when he shot a two over par 75 to win the medal for the best gross score in a Junior Open at his home course, Barnard Castle.

But in a field of 38, the 15-year-old five-handicapper had to settle for second place overall behind clubmate Olivia Bainbridge, who recorded a nett 69 off her handicap of 19.

The winners of Sunday’s Hall Trophy, a mixed greensome, were Staindrop neighbours Phil Ball and Barbara Yorke with 47 points, beating Don and Yvonne Kidd on a countback.

Phil thanked ladies captain Joy Pallister for organising the event, while Barbara added: “Success at last. I might not have been partnering Phil for three years, but it feels like it.”

Nick and Sue Seddon continued their recent good form by finishing third with 46 points, while a remarkable exhibition of straight driving by Shirley Lind-Jackson helped her into fourth place with Colin Stead.
