Firstly, they showed off their skills in a floor competition at Deerness Gymnastics Club, with some children performing competitively for the first time. Lucy Earl received a third-place medal in the preparation set and Sophie Close was awarded a second-place medal in the novice set, with both competing in the year one school age category.

Then a larger group of gymnasts from the club, which trains at Teesdale Leisure Centre, took part in the Hartlepool Open, competing against other clubs from across the region.

Many of the youngsters debuted new routines and some performed at a more challenging level than they’ve competed at before.

The children were scored by judges in several individual disciplines, with the girls taking part in floor, vault, beam and bar routines. The boys also performed on floor, vault and bars, as well as range and conditioning.
