Medal success continues for Winston athlete

MEDAL WINNER: Kate Williams

A BUDDING young athlete from Winston has got the year off to a good start after winning more medals, setting a new personal best and breaking a club record.

Kate Williams, 12, took part in the two-day North Eastern County Championships, in Gateshead, at the weekend bringing home two gold medals, one silver and a bronze.

Kate, who trains with Darlington Harriers and Athletics Club, won bronze in shotput and silver in long jump.

She also brought home a gold medal for reaching 1.35m in the high jump, narrowly missing the championship record of 1.4m.

Her performance in the 60m sprint also saw her set a new personal best of 8.55 seconds in the heat.

Despite recording a slightly slower time in the final, with a time of 8.57secs, the youngster won gold and broke the Darlington Harriers’ club record.

The Staindrop Academy pupil is following in the footsteps of her mum, Ruth Williams, who once ran for Great Britain in the 400m race.

Ms Williams said: “Kate was delighted.

“I think she was more pleased about her personal best in the 60m sprint. That puts her well up there in the country.”

Kate has won dozens of medals since joining Darlington Harriers in 2015.

She is now training for the Scottish Nationals on March 10 and the North Eastern County pentathlon on March 18.

Ms Williams added: “I am very proud of her with the way she is moving forward especially in the sprints.

“She is coming through stronger and stronger.”
