India surges to victory in county cross country

HUNDREDS of young athletes descended on Barnard Castle at the weekend for the annual Durham County Schools Athletic Association (DCSAA) county cross country championships.

A series of races from year seven to senior years 12 and 13 was staged at Barnard Castle School featuring nine teams across the region, with dale runners making up part of the South West Durham team

And in the senior girls’ race, it was a familiar face who stormed to victory.

Former Barnard Castle School student India Pentland finished well ahead of the field. Now a sixthformer at Carmel College, India, from Manfield, was running for Darlington at the event.

In the senior boys’ race, it was a clean sweep for the Durham Central team as Cameron Thomas came home ahead of Ben Horsfield and Will Lindsay.

West Wearside’s Henry Johnson and Will Bellamy took the top two places in the intermediate boys’ event, while Easington’s Nicole Phillips headed Durham Central’s Emily Chong in the intermediate girls’ race.

It was another one-two for West Wearside in the junior boys’ run, Christopher Perkins coming home ahead of Brandon Pye.

West Wearside’s Lucy Scothern won the girls’ race with Gateshead’s Katie Francis in second.

Darlington’s Alex Boyer and Elwood Kelley filled the top two places in the year seven boys’ race while it was victory for Durham Central’s Charlotte Dillon ahead of team mate Ella Jones in the girls’ run.
