THE former ladies captain at Barnard Castle Golf Club has presented a lifeline charity with a £500 donation.
When Caz Smith took on the tenure as ladies captain in 2021-2022, she said supporting local good causes was a priority. She said: “I became ladies captain in November 2021 and set out with a vision to raise money for local charities.”
In the first few months, retired health professional Ms Smith and the ladies section raised £500, which was used to purchase supplies for the food bank at the Well, West Auckland.
She added: “I held a further charity competition, and for my Ladies Captain day in September, a large prize draw, adding a further £500 to
the funds for my second chosen charity – Teesdale Day Clubs.
“Supporting isolated people throughout our local area is very important – this I discovered in my career as community matron for Teesdale. Sadly this is far more prevalent than most people realise.”
Ms Smith handed over a £500.50 cheque at Evenwood’s lunch club at the Randolph Centre this month.
The money, thanks to an anonymous supporter of Teesdale Day Clubs, will be matched funded, doubling the donation.
Ms Smith said: “The total amount raised throughout my year just was £1015.47 – this was phenomenal when everyone is experiencing rising prices and increased household costs.
“In addition to the charities above, I donated £40 to the Durham County Ladies Captains Charity. None of this would have been possible without the support of my vice captain, Yvonne Carr and the Friday Friends group, Liz Angel and Jane Monk.
“I’d like to also thank many local businesses such as Connelly’s Toy Shop, The Spice Lounge, The Old Well, Peats Butchers, Twisters bakery, Auckland Cupcake Company and Blagraves to name a few, who generously gave prizes.
“Huge thanks are due to the ladies and gentleman at Barnard Castle golf club who supported me throughout my tenure.”
