IT was a convincing victory for the combined Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland under 15 girls’ team as they took on Hartlepool Rovers in first game of the season on Sunday.

Hartlepool took the early advantage scoring the opening try which was successfully converted.

With just three minutes on the clock, Alice Bell – from Barney but playing for Hartlepool – flew down the right wing to take Rovers’ second try, followed closely by a third, giving the visitors a health early lead.

At nine minutes, however, Jess Merchant got Barney onto the scoreboard, followed by additional tries in the 13th and 19th minutes.

With momentum on their side, the Barney girls worked like a dream with Matilda Anstey covering and catching the ball before offloading to Jess Merchant who took tackles by three players before passing to Alex Tellegan to take Barney’s fourth try.

The local team’s fifth followed in the 22nd minute.

At 24 minutes in, Barney’s Alex Tellegan took advantage of the open field, flying down right wing to score Barney’s sixth try. Hartlepool came back to score their fourth try at 27 minutes.

Two minutes later Barney’s Alice Bell, running through the centre, scored Barney’s seventh try followed by a great run from by Matilda Anstey to score the eighth try.

She scored again in the 37th minute and the tenth touchdown came from Alex Tellegan. Hartlepool Rovers scored their fifth try at 45 minutes, followed quickly by Barney’s eleventh by Alice Bell.

Play was stopped early due to Hartlepool Rover’s sustaining an injury, handing Barney a 77-29 victory.
