Barnard Castle FC hosted their annual “Old Boys” friendly last Monday, with the match this year being used as a pre-season friendly for the current side.
The old boys team featured a number of stars from the past, including Rory Edwards, Nicky Bellew, and current interim manager, John Close.
The teams were mainly kept separate but with a few of the current squad added to the veterans’ side for balance and to provide a few more options for rotation.
Nobody was complaining that they didn’t have to complete a full 90 minutes.
The match itself ended up being a evenly-contested affair and ended in a 3-3 draw.
Rob Peart who will be an important part of Barney this year, helped his older compatriots out with two goals before Max Applegarth rolled back the years and scored an equaliser in the dying minutes.
It certainly wasn’t as tough and competitive as Barney had faced against Esh Winning the week before, but it was still a fruitful run out.
Jed Dominick has signed from Deerness Valley and looks to be a quality addition.
He grabbed himself a goal as well as the clinical Dan Hull getting his name on the scoresheet.
Barney’s first game is at home to Coundon Cons on Saturday, August 3, at 2.30pm kick off.
