Football round-up: Bowes overcome defending champions in Durham Minor Cup

CUP WIN: Bowes striker Rob Dixon

Crook and District Football League

THERE were victories for two of the dale’s sides in the first round of this season’s Durham Minor Cup.

Bowes FC claimed the most notable scalp – knocking out champions Shildon Railway at Tens Field.

As always, it was a competitive affair between the two sides, with Shildon now boasting former Bowes forward Callum Tallentire up front. And it was the visitors who took the lead before Phil Merryweather popped up from the back to equalise.

Sam Hodgson produced an excellent finish with a left foot cross shot early in the second half to give Bowes the lead before Rob Dixon secured a 3-1 win.

Evenwood Town travelled to South Tyneside and won an 11 goal thriller against Hebburn Involve, eventually taking the tie 7-4.

Ashley Murphy bagged a first half hat-trick and there were two apiece for Glen Hendrix and Jamie Lamb.

It was not such a good day for Glaxo Rangers, however, who were handed an 8-1 defeat at home to Sunderland TC Plastics. Liam Foster scored the consolation for Rangers.

On Saturday, Glaxo Rangers welcome Willington WMC to Manor Farm and Bowes visit Stanhope Town SSC in the league. Evenwood are in cup action again, hosting Heighington in the Weardale Charity Cup first round.

Wear Valley Sunday League

STAINDROP ran out 3-2 winners in last weekend’s dale derby against Toft Hill.

Jamie-Lee Hayman, Adam lee-Shield and Jake Sowerby were on target for Staindrop and the win lifts the side away from the bottom two. Toft Hill, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of division one, still looking for their first league win of the season.

Gainford campaign in the Durham Sunday Cup came to an end in the third preliminary round with a 2-1 home defeat against South Shields Hedworth Hall. Mark Harding scored for Gainford.
