Delight as Gatorz rugby girls are called up by county

COUNTY CALL UP: Members of the Barnard Castle RUFC Gatorz

Ladies rugby

BARNARD Castle Gatorz Women and Girls teams continue to grow and improve in their second year of playing.

This is highlighted by the fact that nine players have been called up to Durham County U15s and U18s squad with another four narrowly missing out after taking part in trials.

Coach Paul Davis said: “Last year, the club got four girls into the two squads so to more than double it in such a short time is a fantastic achievement for all the girls in the team and the coaches.

“The camaraderie in the team is great with all the girls supporting each other on and off the pitch, we are so proud of the county girls.”

Ladies coach Sarah Sowerby added: “What the girls have achieved is fantastic.

“We are using their success to help drive the ladies team in having their first game soon. It’s a great way to socialise, keep fit and have a bit of fun.”

The ladies and girls team got to watch England ladies play France at Doncaster recently and thoroughly loved watching the home side enjoy a win.

Anyone interested in giving rugby a go are welcome to turn up at training sessions.

The teams meet on a Thursday night from 6.30pm to 8pm at the rugby pitches on the Demesnes.
