Cool conditions herald start of new bowls season

Val Cockfield

Barnard Castle Bowling Club Green Opening

THE president welcomed all the members and thanked everyone who had helped to get the ground and clubhouse looking immaculate ready for the new season.

Prior to the opening, ceremony a special presentation was made to George Armstrong, Alwyn Dowson and Alwyn Metcalf, who were runners up at last year’s Open Tournament.

The president then introduced Val Cockfield and invited her to bowl the first bowls and officially open the Green.

Until recently Val had been groundskeeper at The Bowes Museum and a big help to the club but decided to hang up her trowel and take a well deserved rest.

Following the refreshments 32 players braved the cool conditions to play 12 ends and brush off the cobwebs ready for the forthcoming season.
