Club looks to boost junior squads

READY FOR ACTION: The Barney U11 side

COME and give rugby a try.

That’s the message from junior coaches at Barnard Castle RUFC who are looking to boost numbers.

The club runs teams at U7, U8, U9, U10, U11 and U15 levels, teaching youngsters the basic skills of the game before they take part in competitive games.

Ezequiel Monteagudo, who is joint junior co-ordinator and coach for the U9s, said: “It would be fantastic to get more players involved in what is a fantastic game.

“For the U9s, for example, we have seven players, which is the right number, but we need more for substitutes and replacements.”

He added: “We offer separate sessions to give kids the basic skills of the game.

“At U7 and U8, it is touch rugby and then at U9, they are introduced to tackling. At U10 they start rucking and scrummaging and as they get older they embrace the complexities of the game.”

Ezequiel said that no matter what age, if someone wanted to give rugby a try out, special sessions would be organised.

“There is always a way into the game, no matter what age.”

He said the club placed huge importance on playing the game safely, with all coaches fully trained and player safety embedded in the youngsters from an early age.

Training and games are played on a Sunday morning at the Demesnes rugby pitches.
