CHILDREN learned how different types of animals build their homes during an adventurous Wild Wednesday session at Bowless Visitor Centre last week.
Presented by the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership (AONB) the weekly holiday activities are aimed at cultivating a love for nature among young people.
Last week the theme was Dens and Habitats.
Activities included identifying what types of animals live where in the quarry near the centre.
AONB officer Mandy Oliver said they also learned the names given to different types of animal homes such as an otter’s holt and a mole’s fortress.
This was followed by a session in the woods where children built dens out of natural materials such as leaves, stones and twigs.
This week’s theme is Nature’s Art where children will be writing poems and making pieces of art using materials found in nature.
It forms part of the AONB’s art week which includes demonstrations and workshops by local artists.
