On February 7, the Rotary North East district final of the Young Musician of the Year competition took place at Stokesley Methodist Church.
Among those competing were guitarist Ben Lovatt and singer Chloe Hanks – both pupils of Teesdale School Sixth Form – who were winners of the Rotary Club of Teesdale and District heat which took place at The Witham, in Barnard Castle, last November.
The competition aims to offer young people the experience of performing on a public stage and an opportunity to showcase their musical talent.
Each contestant receives feedback of their performance by experienced adjudicators. All competitors were accomplished vocalists or instrumentalists who had won their heats at contests across the North East.
They performed three diverse pieces to show the breadth of their musical ability. Both Ben and Chloe delivered excellent performances and there’s little doubt that a successful musical life beckons.
The adjudicators determined that vocalist Rhian Fernadez (Chester-le-Street) and pianist Allan Zeng (Newcastle Gosforth) would advance to the next round.
Both Ben and Chloe were awarded certificates, with the chair of the adjudicators praising their musical ability and proficiency.
Afterwards Ben said: “I really enjoyed preparing for this competition. It took a lot of time and effort, but it was all worthwhile.”
Chloe added: “The competition was a great way to be challenged in a fun and friendly environment.”
