Work starts at soon-to-be Lidl site on edge of Barnard Castle

IT'S COMING: Work is underway at the Lidl and Home Bargains site TM pic

WORK has begun to dismantle a former auction house, paving the way for the building of new Lidl and Home bargains stores in Barnard Castle.

Workers are expected to complete the demolition of Addisons’ former building, along the A688 to Staindrop this week, with all of the material being reclaimed for recycling.
The building had stood vacant for about three years, and construction of the new buildings is expected to take place soon.
Consolidation Property Group (CPG) was given planning permission to build new stores on the site in January.
A spokesperson for CPG said: “The works being undertaken on site now comprise the demolition of the former auction building.
“We hope to start construction of the Lidl and Home Bargains stores before the end of the year with stores opening in time for Christmas 2021.”
Once completed, the Lidl store will cover some 20,882sq ft of retail space while Home bargains will cover 15,000sq ft. It will also include parking for 144 vehicles.
Although 27 letters of objection were sent to planners when the application was lodged, some 102 people sent letters in support of the development.
Similar support was noted during public consultations held by CPG.
Managing director Martin Ridgway said: “The vast majority of those who attended supported the scheme and the proposed retailers given the lack of choice in the town.
“These new stores will help address local shopping requirements as it is evident that most people drive to Bishop Auckland to do their main shopping.”
Once completed the stores are expected to create about 40 jobs.
