WI members create stunning poppy display

RED FOR REMEMBRANCE: Denton WI members Diane McKay

MORE than 300 individually knitted and crocheted poppies have been turned into a stunning Remembrance Day display at Summerhouse Village Hall.
The cascade of brightly coloured wool flowers was put on display ahead of Remembrance Day at the entrance of the village hall.
It was a collaboration between Denton WI and the village hall committee to mark the centenary of the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal.
Crafty members of Denton WI knitted and crocheted hundreds of flowers during lockdown then fixed them individually to a mesh fabric, before it was put into position.
The bulk of the poppies were created by avid crafter Barbara Braithwaite, who encouraged other members to take part. WI member Nancy James said: “It was Barbara who instigated it and she did the bulk of the poppies, but we tried to do what we
could.
“I got into a bit of a rhythm each evening setting myself a target of how many to do.”
