CHILDREN at Cotherstone Primary School have been learning about “people who help them” during a series of visits by people with unique professions.
Among those to visit have been a vet, a fire and rescue team member, a first responder and a member of the air ambulance service.
Last week it was the turn of police PCSOs Liz Finn and Preet Singh to talk to pre-school and reception pupils about the work they do.
PCSO Singh told the children: “Our main job is to make sure you are all safe and you are happy. Everything else comes after that. We are here to help you and we are your friends.”
Children were keen to know about how police get “baddies” and what a prison cell looks like.
They were also thrilled to learn about the different items police officers carry in their protective vest, including a walkie-talkie, a torch, gloves, camera, notebooks and pens.
The officers advised children what to do if they get lost in a town, including going into a shop and telling the shopkeeper to call the police, and if in an area where there are no shops to scream “help” at the top of their voice.
Children were then given an opportunity to see a police van with its blue lights flashing and its various different sirens.
They also got to see the back of the van where “baddies” are kept followed by a competition to see how many children could fit inside.
