Volunteers turn out in force to remove a mountain of rubbish

PICK IT UP: Julia Steele and nine-year-old son Matthew prepare for the litter pick

LITTER pickers turned out in force to clear rubbish from the streets of Barnard Castle.
The clean-up was co-ordinated by teenager George O’Brien along with the Rotary’s satellite e-club, the TCR Hub, The Witham and volunteer group The Workers, and coincided with Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean.
The event attracted 43 volunteers aged from four upwards, who were each given their own part of town to cover.
After two hours of litter picking, 29 bags of rubbish had been collected.
Sarah Gent, family activities co-ordinator at the TCR Bub, said: “It was a lovely community spirited event and many of the families who came said they would like to do it more often.
“TCR Hub, Barnard Castle Rotary and The Witham were all delighted to be a part of this and want to say thank you to everyone who got involved. The team at TCR Hub are keen to support George’s Anti Litter Bugs with a regular pick – watch this space.”
Julia Steele, who took part with nine-year-old son Matthew, said: “It’s important. We think it’s a great thing for the town and Matthew has been doing a lot on the environment at Montalbo School.”
