The beast is back – snow and winds cause disruption across the dale

DAY TRIP: These two visitors were heading to the Lakes but only got as far as Barnard Castle

HEAVY snow and high winds have combined to cause disruption across the dale today (SUNDAY).

There were problems at the Abbey Bridge, near Barnard Castle, after a vehicle bumped the structure and a HGV had been unable to pass – blocking the single carriage route to other wagons.

Cars were getting through with extreme care and police had been informed of the incident.

Elsewhere, a number of roads were closed, including: the B6278 Stanhope to Eggleston; C27 St Johns Chapel to Langdon Beck; C166 – A66 to The Stang; B6276 Mickleton to Brough; B6277 Langdon Beck to Alston; and the C41 Billy Bank Woodlands to Kinninvie.

Highways England confirmed the A66 between Brough and Brough remains closed due to the snow.

The latest Met Office forecast was warning of freezing temperatures all day across the dale with the chance of further snow.

Temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days.
