Teenage litter picker organises clean-up around Barnard Castle

PICK IT UP: Town teenager George O'Brien hopes others will join him at a litter picking event he has organised for Saturday

A TEENAGER who is passionate about tackling litter is hoping others will join his campaign to clean up a dale town.

George O’Brien, who lives at Cambridge Terrace, Barnard Castle, has been a passionate litter picker all his life.

The 14-year-old has taken part in a number of litter picks organised by Durham County Council’s green team and was an eager volunteer each time former town councillor Roger Peat organised a clean-up. He even has several of his own special litter picking tools.

And now George, who has autism and attends Oaks Secondary School, in Spennymoor, has designed his own Anti Litter Bug campaign and is hoping others will heed his message of “don’t be bitter, pick up litter” .

As well as designing a logo, George, with help from his mum Faye, has created a video letting friends and family know about his campaign and inviting them to take part in a litter pick he has organised in Barnard Castle on Saturday, October 12.

He said: “I hope we can do them on a regular basis, maybe four times a year – spring, summer, autumn and winter.”

Durham County Council is providing all of the equipment for the litter pick and anyone who wishes to support George should meet at Barnard Castle Rugby Club at 10am.

He added: “I’d really like it if there were a lot of people and we could split into teams to pick up the litter on Scar Top, the Demesnes and other places as well.

“I would say it’s better that you make sure you are not a litter bug and you put it in a bin. But my message is don’t be bitter come and help pick up litter.”
